Project Overview

Set along the banks of the Damiraparan River in Gabala, Qafqaz Riverside Hotel is a well-known mountain resort offering spa facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, and wide views of the surrounding landscape. The hotel already had a strong identity and loyal guests. The brief was not to replace that identity, but to guide a phased refurbishment with a clear design direction.

DZ Design was appointed to lead the concept development for this transformation. Some areas, including the guestrooms, have been fully redesigned. Other public spaces are still undergoing refurbishment. The aim is to ensure that each completed phase connects seamlessly to the next.

Design Approach

The setting naturally informed the concept. A riverside resort in the mountains should feel calm, layered and grounded in its environment. The design builds on warm timber tones, textured finishes and a soft neutral palette. Subtle patterns and artwork reference local craft without feeling themed.

Rather than treating each space in isolation, the refurbishment introduces a shared visual language. Timber panelling, stone accents and custom rugs appear throughout. Lighting has been upgraded to create a welcoming atmosphere in the evening and a fresh clarity during the day. The result feels consistent and intentional.

Guestrooms Fully Redone

The guestrooms were among the first spaces to be completed. They now carry a stronger identity and a more refined layout.

Headboards are layered with patterned textiles inspired by regional motifs. Timber joinery frames the beds and integrates desks and storage, creating a cohesive wall composition. Soft carpets add comfort, while wall sconces and pendant lights provide gentle, balanced illumination.

Suites and cottages include defined living areas with generous seating. Furniture is arranged to support relaxation, whether guests are travelling as families or couples. The colour palette remains calm, with accents introduced through cushions, rugs and art. Large windows continue to frame mountain views, which remain central to the experience.

Bathrooms have been refreshed with updated finishes and improved lighting, aligning them with the new room concept.

Public Areas in Progress

The lobby and lounge areas are evolving as part of the phased refurbishment. The concept introduces sculptural lighting features, curated artwork and layered seating zones.

Fireplace areas are designed as social anchors. Stacked timber detailing, textured stone backdrops and patterned rugs create depth and warmth. Seating is grouped in clusters rather than arranged in rows, encouraging conversation and comfort.

The brasserie and bar areas are gradually being aligned with the new direction. Upholstery, timber surfaces and subtle metal details elevate the atmosphere while remaining relaxed. Because the project is phased, certain spaces still reflect the earlier design. Over time, each area will be updated to reflect the overall vision.

A Long-Term Strategy

Resort design must support both aesthetics and durability. Materials were selected for longevity as well as visual appeal. Layouts allow flexibility, accommodating families, couples and larger groups.

Corridors and transitional spaces are also included in the wider strategy, ensuring continuity throughout the property. Even as refurbishment continues, the concept provides a clear framework for future phases.

The spa and leisure areas benefit from subtle links to the updated guestrooms through material choices and colour tones. These connections strengthen the overall experience without requiring dramatic changes.

Moving Forward

The refurbishment of Qafqaz Riverside Hotel is not a single reveal. It is a thoughtful progression. Guestrooms already reflect the new concept in full. Public spaces are steadily evolving.

The outcome is a resort that feels refreshed and cohesive, while still honouring its location and loyal guests. As each phase is completed, the design continues to build on its core idea: creating a warm, grounded environment that complements the mountains and river that define Gabala.
