Swissotel Hotel Rooms & Serviced Apartments Refurbishment
When Swissotel approached DZ Design, the brief extended beyond guest rooms. The project included the refurbishment of standard hotel rooms as well as serviced hotel apartments spanning up to 1,000 sqft. The aim was to elevate the guest experience across all accommodation types while maintaining the brand’s Swiss heritage and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
This was a refinement project. The layouts remained largely intact, yet the atmosphere, materials and detailing required a thoughtful upgrade. The challenge was to introduce a stronger sense of warmth, sophistication and comfort without disrupting the overall identity of the property.
The Brief
Swissotel required a cohesive concept that could unify smaller hotel rooms and larger serviced apartments under one clear design language. The rooms needed to feel contemporary, welcoming and aligned with international hospitality standards. The apartments required a slightly more residential tone, while still maintaining hotel quality and consistency.
Operational efficiency and budget awareness were central to the brief. This meant working intelligently with existing elements where possible and introducing upgrades that would deliver visible impact and long-term value.
The Concept: Alpine Charm
DZ Design developed a concept titled Alpine Charm, inspired by the natural textures and quiet refinement associated with Swiss landscapes. The idea was to create interiors that feel grounded, layered and comfortable, with subtle detailing that rewards closer attention.
A calm neutral base forms the foundation of the design. Warm wood finishes add depth and familiarity. Upholstered headboards in rich green introduce texture and softness. Burnt orange cushions and accent pieces provide warmth and character without overwhelming the space.
Across both rooms and apartments, the concept flows naturally. Guests experience a consistent narrative throughout the property, whether they are staying for one night or several weeks.
Hotel Design for Different Scales
The hotel rooms were refreshed with upgraded materials, refined joinery and carefully layered lighting. Hardwood flooring enhances warmth and durability. Travertine tiles elevate the bathrooms with a natural, tactile finish. Custom wallpaper adds visual depth while maintaining a sense of calm.
Lighting was reconsidered to improve comfort and usability. Integrated bedside lights and wall sconces create a gentle evening atmosphere, while ceiling lighting ensures clarity during the day. The result is a room that supports rest, work and relaxation with equal ease.
In the serviced apartments, the scale allowed for a more residential approach. Lounge areas were enhanced with thoughtfully selected furniture, textured rugs and warm lighting. Kitchenettes were refined with natural stone surfaces and streamlined cabinetry, offering practicality without compromising aesthetics.
These larger units required flexibility. Guests may be travelling for business, relocating temporarily or staying with family. The design supports each scenario with comfort and clarity.
Materiality and Refinement
Material selection played a central role in the refurbishment strategy. Calacatta stone surfaces introduce quiet elegance to desks and side tables. Antique brass hardware adds a subtle layer of detail. Soft fabrics and textured upholstery enhance acoustic comfort and visual warmth.
Where possible, existing joinery was refreshed rather than replaced. This approach reflects a responsible and strategic mindset, ensuring that investment is directed where it makes the greatest impact.
Every decision was guided by experience in hospitality interior design and an understanding of guest expectations.
A Unified Hospitality Experience
Refurbishing both hotel rooms and serviced apartments within one property requires careful coordination. The design language must feel consistent while responding to different spatial needs.
At Swissotel, the Alpine Charm concept creates a seamless journey across all accommodation types. The transformation strengthens brand identity, enhances guest comfort and introduces a renewed sense of contemporary luxury.
